Salty Lips Kat Charles Surfing WA SaltyLips

Lady Sliders

Surfer, photographer, explorer, artist, musician, creator, environmental activist…is there anything this little lady can’t turn her hand to?

This creative creature hailing from the depths of WA bounced onto my radar during my first trip to Morocco many moons ago. Kat was there working as a surf guide and soon took me under her wing and educated me on the many sketchy rock-offs found along Morocco’s wave rich coastline. Her extreme frothability was infectious and I jumped at the chance to go back and hang out with her when the season quietened down, giving us more time to explore. Continue reading

SaltyLips Rosary Walsh Indonesia surf Salty Lips

Getting some shade.

After two months of radio silence on an Indonesian Island, Rosary finally reappeared for just long enough to share her surf stories and photos before heading off again to another spot. And it certainly looks like she has been having all the fun! After leaving the cold waters of Ireland she returned to some of her favourite Indo waves, catching up with SaltyLips’ crew member Shannon, along with some old friends, and collecting a few new ones. SaltyLips Georgia Surf Sumbawa Indonesia

Georgia in D E E P

On one particularly spontaneous Indo trip, I found myself in West Sumbawa with SaltyLips’ Shannon and an amazing surfing couple Gareth and Cassie. We left the maxed out windy conditions in the east, drove 10 hours through the night and found ourselves faced with almost perfect conditions at one of West Sumbawa’s heaviest waves. Guillotine lips and razor sharp shallow reef, this was a wave I had no intention of surfing and I stuck to the tamer stuff. If I couldn’t surf at the peak of this monster swell, I might as well watch one of the craziest waves turn on. Continue reading

Indo Dreaming

One Wave, One Sequence

Rosary SaltyLips Indonesia Surfing

Rosary loving life!

After a long winter at home back in Ireland, Rosary has swapped her second skin of neoprene for a bikini & boardies, and jettted off to her second home, Indonesia. While we eagerly await the surf stories and photos from her trip so far, here is a look back to a previous Indo adventure. One wave, one sequence, but an epic one at that … thought it deserved it’s own post!

Mexico Sessions: Heading North

Floggings, Floods and Federals

Rosary taking it on...

Rosary taking it on…

Leaving me to my slightly less heart-in-mouth waves further south, Rosary set off on her journey, two overnight buses north, with the promise of the big heavy beachies that Mexico is famous for. Setting up her tent, her home for the next two months, Rosary settled in to her new spot. I was only a little ashamed that I had ditched my tent and opted for an $8 a night room after she left, but I was craving some creature comforts. Return to West El Salvador

Home Away from Home

Fun waves!

Fun waves!

Two 13 hour bus journeys, two border crossings and a fading hangover later, Nathan and I arrived at our destination, a fishing village in West El Salvador. Back to my concrete cell above a shop, with a balcony overlooking my favourite wave, pupusas stuffed with various lava hot fillings and the best fruit salads of my trip. With pretty consistent waves, and cool locals, this was the perfect spot to settle down for a while for some cheap living. Continue reading

Mexico Sessions Tres

Magic Sessions and Chasing Sandbanks

Rosary dawny!

Rosary dawny!

With me still out of the water, on injury time, we packed up our tents and got back on the road. Rosary had convinced me to reluctantly purchase a tent, saying it was the only way to travel Mexico. She was right of course but  I did miss the comforts of a fan! Picking up two mad Irish lads Garret and Fionan that we knew from Indonesia, we scored some super fun waves,  experienced a yearly local fiesta and met some interesting characters. Continue reading

Pumping Waves and New Friends

Playa Gigante Sessions

Yoga time!

India’s yoga time!

The surf has been pumping in India’s little piece of paradise that she calls home, Playa Gigante, Nicaragua. With huge waves, light off shore breezes, the conditions have been pretty much perfect for the advanced surfer. Even with the crowds to contend with there have been plenty of waves to go round. With a lot of new people moving through the town, India has made some great new surfer girlfriends to get out their & play in the ocean with . Taking up Zumba in her free time, she is now contemplating adding this to her repertoire of teaching skills. Continue reading

Mexico Sessions Uno

Good waves, rank food and befriending strays

El Gringo Liam.

El Gringo Liam.

Whilst I was digging sea urchin spines out of my foot in El Salvador, Rosary was scoring super fun waves in Mexico.

Straight off a 26 hour bus journey from El Salvador she had bumped into an Irish friend Liam, purchased a second hand tent and began her exploration of the Mexican coastline with him and a couple of Norwegians.  Continue reading
