The Journey North

With so much coastline to explore it was time to leave the comforts of South Nicaragua & get back on the road…destination North Nicaragua. Definitely one of the funniest journeys I have ever made. Rosary and I set off in the luxury of a taxi to Grenada to fix her chipped tooth (yep with 2 accident prone people travelling together…there is always going to be something..and a hillbilly chipped tooth is up there!)

With slightly fuzzy heads from our last night we managed to get all packed up and depart on time…a good start. But that’s where it ended! After futile attempts to get our driver to slow down, we eventually had to beg him to stop…our boards were hanging off the side of the vehicle at a 45 degree angle due to a broken front roof strap! Another 10 seconds and both our quivers would have been road kill! With a cheerful chuckle from our driver…’no problemo’ (raised eyebrows from us!)..we were back on track at a significantly reduced speed.

We spent the rest of the day pleading (in limited Spanish) with bus and taxi drivers to take us and our boards to the next city or destination. After five connections, being bundled in & out of chicken buses and taxis, we finally made it to the homestay in North Nicaragua at 9pm, 25 min walk from the heavy beachbreak we had travelled there to surf!
